When last we left How I Met Your Mother in May, Marshall and Lily had decided to make a baby, Robin’s boyfriend had accepted a job in Chicago which she had turned down, and Ted… well, other than a bad dye job, not much happened with Ted in his quest for mama. Overall, it was a quiet capper to a season that bummed out some hardcore HIMYM fans because of a general paucity of Big Episodes with Big Moments. But fear not, die-hards: Vulture talked to co-creator Craig Thomas, and he tells us that he and his staff are planning a return to old school HIMYM during season six, with plenty of extended story arcs and lots of movement in the lives of our heroes. So — SPOILERS AHEAD! — look for a big twist in the mama drama, a new wrinkle in the saga of Robin Sparkles, the revelation of Barney’s real dad, and, if producers get their wish, the first-ever HIMYM episode shot entirely on location in New York.

“Season five was a very fun season; we did some of our best episodes… but there wasn’t this larger emotional arc like you had in some past seasons,” says Thomas. “We wanted to slow down the [narrative] after telling the Robin and Barney relationship, so we opened it up in the middle of the season and did some stand-alone episodes. That meant we didn’t emotionally move the ball down the field as much as we have in past years.”

No cause for alarm here. Usually when outside sources are brought in to consult on an existing project, the implication is that something is wrong with it, but in this case, you can hardly blame Disney for having Pixar come give input for the Muppets movie. Even Kobe Bryant would probably listen to advice from Michael Jordan.

The project, which is starring and being written by surprisingly large fan of puppets, Jason Segel, is asking the Pixar big guns, John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, Michael Arndt, Bob Peterson and president Ed Catmull to give their input as to how to bring the Muppets back in a big way.

The story comes from THR, who is quick to point out that Pixar now has had an unprecedented ELEVEN hits in a row, with no signs of slowing down just yet. If the Muppets could even steal a bit of that magic, they would be well on their way to a hit.

This project is interesting because well, everyone likes the Muppets, yet they’ve never been exactly a dominating force at the box office, despite how familiar most people are with the characters. But kids today probably don’t really know the Muppets as well as those from my generation do, and I’ll be curious if there’s a sort of “makeover” that goes along with this film to re-introduce the gang.

Despicable Me sequel

The result is now a momentum changer for Universal on several fronts. Despicable Me ended a prolonged hit pic slump. It plugged the studio into a hot family film marketplace after a series of adult dramas failed to earn back their oversized budgets. Most importantly, Despicable Me is the first Universal film in a while where the studio doesn’t have to defend the costs and first dollar gross outlays. The film was made for $69 million with little or no gross out the door. It is a fresh IP with a sequel already in the works: Despicable Me 2 talks are already underway among the studio, Meledandri, and writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.

In the 3-D animated film “Despicable Me,” Jason Segel voices the character of Vector, who is in a fierce battle with a character named Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) to become the greatest villain in the world. The two rivals try to outdo each other to the point that the safety of the world may be at stake.
Segel discussed his experience making the film at a “Despicable Me” press conference in Los Angeles. Segel also talked about what the future may hold for his character in the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.”

Can you tell us what it’s like to play such a delicious villain?
I was given a sketch very early, and I have a bit of a background in puppetry. So coming up with a voice to match this sketch I was given was my real inspiration. I had a few months to come up with a voice, and I came up with a few and I went in and they helped me choose. These guys are such geniuses. The one they ended up choosing was perfect.

Obviously, you look nothing like your character, but did you see any mannerisms that they picked up from you?
I’m going to answer that question two-fold. One, I was very excited, the whole thing that drew me to doing an animated film is that you’re freed from the physical limitations of your physical body. All of a sudden you get to be something that has nothing to do with the fact that I’m a 6′ 4″, kind of lumbering dude. And that was really exciting; puppetry is very similar. And then this guy is based almost wholly on insecurity. He just wants to prove to his dad that he’s worthy, in this case the most evil person alive.
So I kind of drew from there. It was very freeing. I think for all of the cast, you’ll probably notice, that nobody is doing their voice. Steve, myself, Russell [Brand], Julie [Andrews] — no one is talking like they normally talk and it’s because all of a sudden you’re freed from the physical limitations of how you look, which is amazing.

Vector kind of looks like Bill Gates …
He does a bit like Bill Gates, yeah!
