Russell Brand’s breakthrough movie role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall was originally intended for Hugh Grant. The film’s writer and star Jason Segel has revealed he dreamed up Grant as his onscreen love rival in the film, but had to rejig the part when Brand blew him away at an audition.
Segel tells 944 magazine:
“The part was originally written to be a British author, like a Hugh Grant type. Russell walked in to audition, and was so charismatic and good. It was a different choice, but made perfect sense. He captured that guy you totally hate and is dating your ex-girlfriend. He was perfect. He’s a consummate gentleman and a pleasure to act with… Russell’s going to be a huge star,”
Despicable Me
Opens: July 9th 2010
Cast: Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Russell Brand
Director: Chris Renaud, Pierre Coffin
Summary: Gru is a supervillain whose arsenal vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad.
Analysis: Not Pixar, Dreamworks or Fox, ‘Despicable’ is from Universal’s new outfit Illumination Entertainment who’re also behind the Russell Brand-led Easter Bunny project “I Hop”. There’s some nice CG design work, a strong voice cast of skilled comedians rather than unnecessary film stars, and two semi-decent teaser trailers so far. Yet with the CG-animated genre so plagued by inferior product these days, it’s hard to get excited for something like this.

Gulliver’s Travels
Opens: December 22nd 2010
Cast: Jack Black, Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Amanda Peet, Billy Connolly, Catherine Tate
Director: Rob Letterman
Summary: Lemuel Gulliver, a free-spirited travel writer is on an assignment to the Bermuda Triangle and suddenly finds himself a giant among men when he washes ashore on the hidden island of Liliput, home to a population of industrious, yet tiny, people.
Analysis: Jonathan Swift’s 18th century satire has been translated many times before but usually in mini-series or animated form rather than a live-action feature. So this new adaptation will at least fill that niche, and happens to include a very impressive cast of comedians from the US and UK. Director Rob Letterman’s resume though has been as writer/director on Dreamworks animated features like “Monsters vs. Aliens” and “Shark Tale”, how he’ll do in the live-action arena is anyone’s guess.

“How I Met Your Mother” Spoiler
AusielloFiles posted a “How I Met Your Mother” spoiler:
Question: Riddle me something about How I Met Your Mother’s 100th episode. –Chad
Ausiello: I can confirm three things: Barney will suffer a devastating personal loss, we will finally see Ted’s baby-mama, and the episode more than lives up to the hype.
We’ve come to the end of 2009, so we thought we’d weigh in with a look back at the first 10 years of the 21st century in the movie world and discuss the various different “events” which shaped the decade.
10. The Rise of “The Apatow Comedy”
Judd Apatow is a producer who’s actually been working since the 90s (did you know he produced the Jim Carrey dark comedy, The Cable Guy, for instance?) but it was in 2005 that we started to see the emergence of “the Apatow comedy,” thanks in large part to The 40 Year Old Virgin. It was a truly hilarious film (I can’t remember ever laughing that much in a theater) but also one with a lot of heart and relatability. Sure, you had your crude sex jokes, but you also had a sweet story at the center, brought to life particularly well by stars Steve Carell and Catherine Keener.
The 40 Year Old Virgin was a smash hit, and it led to a slew of comedies from the Apatow camp, even if (as some people often forget) Apatow himself didn’t direct most of them. Superbad, Knocked Up, Funny People, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pineapple Express, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story – all big hits with audiences. I don’t personally find all of his movies as hilarious as most people do, but there’s no denying the impact his style has had on the comedy genre. For instance, you’ll often hear people say, “It wasn’t as funny as [insert Apatow comedy here].” And I don’t see any sign of the Apatow comedy train slowing down anytime soon.

“Undeclared:” Brilliant Shows Cancelled too Soon
That Warm Glow has made a list of the top 10 “best brilliant-but-canceled too soon shows of the decade” the ones that should have become huge hits but never did. (“Freaks and Geeks” is not eligible, started before 2000):
4. “Undeclared” (Fox, 2001)
Seth Rogen. Jason Segel. Judd Apatow. Guest stars Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller. How in the world did this series fail? Probably because Fox never promoted it. Comedy was dead after 9/11, remember? The series followed the wacky hijinks of a group of college freshmen, and for a few short months it was the funniest thing on TV. Instead of going the “American Pie”-model sex/gross-out comedy route, the show was actually fairly realistic, finding humor in the stresses and emotional turmoil (and, OK, potty humor) that defines the college years. Who didn’t know guys just like Marshall and Ron (Timm Sharp and Rogen) in college? There were so many high points: Loudon Wainright III as the dad who wants to be one of the guys; the pre-”Sons of Anarchy” Charlie Hunnam (he’s British!) as a pretty-boy drama student; and my favorite character, Perry (whatever happened to Jarrett Grode?), the deadpan, sarcastic guy who stole every scene he was in and could break into freestyle rap at the drop of a hat. It had witty, razor-sharp dialogue, was consistently hilarious and heartfelt and a stars-of-tomorrow cast. Of course it was doomed to fail.
